Portland’s Pittock Mansion was named one of the most haunted places in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler.

The travel website included the Portland landmark in an article highlighting haunted destinations across the country.

“Whether you’re a true believer or a supernatural agnostic, there’s no denying the appeal of haunted destinations, especially around Halloween,” Condé Nast said. “Ghostly lore actually provides historical depth to a lot of places, adding some dark-but-fun layers to attractions that might otherwise get overlooked.”

Here’s why Pittock Mansion made the list and what to know before visiting.

Why is Pittock Mansion said to be haunted?

Construction on Pittock Mansion began in 1912, just beyond Portland’s city limits. Oregon pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock built it as their dream home.

Henry traveled to Oregon from Pittsburgh in 1853 via the Oregon Trail and began working for The Oregonian as a typesetter. He took ownership of the newspaper in 1860, the same year he married Georgiana Burton.

According to the mansion’s official history, after building a successful newspaper business, the couple began planning their mansion. Construction started in 1912, and the couple moved into the home in 1914 with eight other family members.

Georgiana then died in 1918, and Henry died in 1919. Their ghosts are said to remain in the house.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, reported occurrences include the smell of roses, Georgiana’s favorite flower, filling rooms where no flowers are present. A childhood portrait of Henry is also said to move from one place to another on its own.

Portland purchased the mansion in 1964, and it opened to the public as a historic house museum the following year.
