A popular sand raking event is returning to Florence Oct. 24, giving beachgoers a chance to walk through artwork created right on Heceta Beach.

Circles in the Sand is celebrating its ninth year and is inviting visitors to walk through a labyrinth raked into the sand, with patterns and artwork surrounding one continuous path.

The Circles in the Sand team will create the design near Driftwood Shores Resort. Visitors can watch the artists work throughout the afternoon, then walk the finished path until sunset. Eventually, the returning tide will wash the artwork away.

When can visitors walk the labyrinth?

According to the organizer’s Florence schedule, the team begins drawing at 3 p.m., followed by volunteers grooming the sand at 4 p.m.

The public walk starts at 5 p.m. and continues until sunset at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 24.

There are no dead ends or wrong turns in the labyrinth. Visitors follow a single path at their own pace.

How can you participate?

Come early to watch the design take shape, or arrive for the walk at 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Those interested in helping groom the sand can contact organizers at the Cirles in the Sand website to ask about volunteer spots.

Where is the Circles in the sand event in Florence?

The event takes place on Heceta Beach near Driftwood Shores Resort, 88416 First Ave., in Florence.

Parking near the beach is limited. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce notes that shuttle service is often available, but visitors should check for confirmed arrangements before heading out. The chamber also lists Mobi-Mats and David’s Chair among the event’s beach access options.
