On Thursday, Oct. 15, three children and a learning specialist were killed when a gunman opened fire inside a special education classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend.

Another student and a staff member were hospitalized with critical injuries. A teacher who fought the attacker was not injured.

Now, the district has shared more information about the survivors, confirming that five students and four staff members were in the classroom during the shooting.

Bend-La Pine Schools spokesperson Scott Maben said that another student and a staff member were in the room, in addition to those identified in earlier accounts.

Maben said neither was physically harmed by the gunman. However, the district had not received enough information to determine whether either suffered injuries while running or hiding. He did not provide the additional student’s age.

The update adds to earlier coverage of the shooting and the actions of a teacher and a school parent who intervened.

Who was in the classroom?

Three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, were killed in the shooting. Among them was 5-year-old Rhoam Summer. Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old learning specialist, also died in the attack.

Seven-year-old Saylor Graham and special education staff member Becky Drury were injured.

All four staff members in the classroom worked directly for the school district, according to the district.

Previous coverage detailed how a teacher confronted the 16-year-old gunman inside the classroom and tried to take his firearm. A parent who had followed the teen into the school then fatally shot him.

What has the district shared about the gunman?

The 16-year-old gunman previously attended Silver Rail and was last enrolled in Bend-La Pine Schools in November 2025, according to the district.

His enrollment history also included three other district schools and a district-run program for students needing additional support.

Investigators were still working to determine a motive for the attack.

When will students return to school?

Bend-La Pine school buildings remained closed Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19-20, following the shooting.

A return date for Silver Rail students had not been announced in Monday’s update. The district has said it would consult with school staff and parents as those discussions continued.

Local parents also used social media to offer child care to families whose caregivers needed to return to work while schools were closed, according to the Oregonian.

How is Becky Drury recovering?

Drury continued recovering from her injuries at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, her husband, Will Drury, said in a statement Monday.

He said her recovery would take time and described her as showing courage and determination.
