Junction City 2026 Scandinavian Festival returns for four days

The Scandinavian Festival returns to Junction City Thursday, Aug. 13, bringing four days of traditional food, dancing, crafts, and cultural activities to the Willamette Valley.

Now in its 65th year, the annual festival celebrates the cultures of Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway.

The free event runs Aug. 13-16, and includes more than 90 vendor booths, performers from Oregon and around the country, and activities designed to turn downtown Junction City into a Scandinavian village.

What can visitors expect at the Scandinavian Festival?

For four days, downtown Junction City takes on the look and feel of an 1800s Scandinavian village.

Performers and vendors dress in traditional regional clothing or Viking attire, while booths and small structures are designed in traditional Scandinavian styles.

Visitors can watch blacksmithing demonstrations, see Hardanger embroidery, listen to Scandinavian storytelling, browse handmade goods, and learn Nordic dances. Performers from Oregon and other parts of the country will also take the festival stages throughout the weekend.

Food is another major part of the celebration. Festival vendors serve Scandinavian specialties that can be difficult to find elsewhere in Oregon, including frikadeller, æbleskiver, lefse, Swedish meat pies, pastries, and other traditional dishes.

Which Scandinavian country is celebrated each day?

Each day of the festival highlights a different Scandinavian country and its traditions.

The festival begins Thursday with Swedish Day, followed by Danish Day on Friday and Finnish Day on Saturday. Norway Day closes the celebration Sunday.

Visitors can expect different traditional clothing, music, dancing, food, and cultural activities as the festival moves from one country to the next.

How is the festival celebrating its 65th year?

The Scandinavian Festival has been a Junction City tradition since 1961, and this year’s event will include a look back at more than six decades of celebrations.

The Scandinavian Cultural Foundation partnered with the Junction City Historical Society to feature photographs from the festival’s early years in the free 2026 festival magazine.

The collection includes images from the 1960s and 1970s showing how the event has grown while maintaining many of its longtime traditions.

The festival has become one of Junction City’s signature annual events, drawing visitors to the Lane County community for Scandinavian culture, food, and entertainment.

Can visitors join the dancing?

Visitors don’t have to stay on the sidelines.

Interactive entertainment is scheduled throughout the festival, and each day concludes with a community dance that invites visitors onto the stage alongside experienced Scandinavian dancers.

The tradition brings together children, longtime dancers, and festival visitors for polkas and other dances that have been passed down for generations.

When is the 2026 Scandinavian Festival?

The Scandinavian Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, through Saturday, Aug. 15, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in downtown Junction City near West Sixth Avenue and Greenwood Street.

Admission and entertainment are free.
