This Portland Winery Was Named One of the Best in the U.S. by USA Today

A Portland winery known for its Wagyu smash burger and sweeping views of the Tualatin Valley just earned the title of best winery restaurant in the country.

USA Today’s 2026 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards named Amaterra Winery as the No. 1 “Best Winery Restaurant” in the U.S. after opening less than four years ago in Portland’s West Hills.

“It’s extremely exciting. For such a young winery and restaurant to be recognized with such an honor means we’ve been doing something right,” said Mark Beringer, director of operations at Amaterra Winery, in an interview with KPTV.

What Makes Amaterra Stand Out

Amaterra sits above a 12-acre estate vineyard in Portland’s West Hills, with dining room views that stretch across the Tualatin Valley.

Grapes are grown on site, along with fruit sourced from regional partners, and are crafted into the winery’s signature wines on the property.

USA Today’s review singled out the pan seared scallops and the Wagyu smash burger as standout dishes. Executive Chef Jami Flatt leads the kitchen and builds the menu around Pacific Northwest ingredients.

“Our executive chef does an amazing job of bringing in local ingredients. He works a lot with our local vendors, especially at the farmers markets down here in Beaverton, to bring as many of those ingredients into our kitchen and make it fresh and Pacific Northwest oriented,” Beringer said.

A Winery on a Roll

The USA Today honor lands just weeks after Amaterra’s 2022 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir earned a gold medal and 96 points from the Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the wine industry’s most respected competitions.

Amaterra has picked up several other honors in the past year.

Portland Business Journal readers named it the city’s #1 Most Popular Restaurant in 2025 and Eater included it among Portland’s best restaurants with views that same year. It was also included in Oregon Wedding Day as a top wedding venue in the state for 2026.

Amaterra’s Growing Portland Footprint

Amaterra Hospitality Group also runs Amaterra Kitchen + Social Club, a restaurant and wine venue in downtown Bend.

The company expanded further in July 2026 with the $11 million purchase of the RiverPlace Hotel on Portland’s South Waterfront, and Beringer said the group is looking at more ways to grow the Amaterra brand.
