A 911 call released Nov. 3 captures what a Bend father told a dispatcher just before he went into his daughters’ elementary school and fatally shot a 16-year-old gunman.
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, called 911 on Oct. 15 after seeing someone with a gun at Silver Rail Elementary School. He told the dispatcher he was armed. She urged him to wait for police.
Three students and a teacher were killed in the shooting. Another student and teacher were seriously wounded.

What did Giamanco tell 911?
In the recording released by Deschutes County, Giamanco repeatedly names Silver Rail Elementary as he and the dispatcher talk over each other. He tells her he was driving by and didn’t know the person with the gun.
When the dispatcher asks where the shooter is at the school, Giamanco says the person is on the south side and going into the building. He then tells her the person is firing. The dispatcher says help is on the way before the call ends.
Giamanco told Oregon Public Broadcasting that some of the dispatcher’s questions frustrated him, though he understood she had procedures to follow. He said he went inside because he believed people would die if he waited.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said a teacher threw her cellphone at the gunman and was struggling with him for control of his shotgun when Giamanco fired, killing the teenager.
